Work stopped on residential project on top of Ho Man Tin MTR station after subsidence detected

  • Reading recorded in subway connecting two streets and Ho Man Tin station shows subsidence level of 21mm, exceeding preset trigger level of 20mm

Foundation work at a private residential project on top of Ho Man Tin MTR station has been suspended after excessive subsidence was detected at a nearby pedestrian subway.

A government spokesman said on Friday a reading recorded at a checkpoint in the subway connecting Chung Hau Street, Fat Kwong Street and Ho Man Tin station had reached 21mm on Thursday morning, exceeding the preset trigger level of 20mm.

He said the MTR had confirmed the affected subway was structurally independent to the main station structure.

The Buildings Department inspected the subway and confirmed it was structurally safe. It said the construction of the project had not affected the structural safety or operation of the railway or its facilities.

The department, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department and MTR would continue to closely monitor the situation.

The MTR Corporation said it had requested the suspension of work at the development project and also requested the developer suspend all foundation work at the relevant railway protection area on the Kwun Tong line. It had also reported the case to the government.

The MTR requested the Registered Building Professionals appointed by the developer provide methods and alleviation measures that could effectively reduce the subsidence.

Consent to resume the work would only be granted after the MTR was satisfied that further construction work would not affect the safe operation of the railway or its facilities.

Structural subsidence issues relating to MTR facilities are not new.

In August last year, the corporation revealed that more than 130 monitoring points along the Sha Tin-Central rail link, which was under construction, had sunk to a point that further investigation was required, with the future Exhibition Centre station in Wan Chai the most affected.

It said exceeding the point, or trigger values, did not necessarily mean that nearby buildings, structures and facilities would become unsafe.
