A restaurant owner in central China has caused much amusement online by setting casual employees a test on dish names after he noticed they wrote the wrong Chinese characters when taking orders.

In a viral video, the owner of a barbecue outlet in Xinxiang, Henan province asked staff he had employed for the summer season to sit at separate tables with a pen and paper while he announced dish names, Xiaozheng Video reported.

The four waiters were either university students or recent secondary school graduates born after the year 2000.

The boss read out the names of seven of his eatery’s most popular dishes, such as grilled squid and grilled oysters.

The young man who performed the best got one Chinese character wrong, while the worst performer had either incorrect characters or had left a blank space – six times.

“I held this test since their handwritten orders were either hard to read, had the wrong characters, or were marked incorrectly,” the owner said.
