Prosecutors in China have ordered a woman to pay compensation of 218,000 yuan (US$31,000) to the family of her boyfriend who died after he jumped from the car she was driving during a row.
Dashboard camera footage shows the man unexpectedly open the car door and jump out of the car after the woman taunted him about dying.
The woman, known as Liu, was detained by police in Hejin, in the northern province of Shanxi, following her boyfriend’s death in April last year, the Legal Daily reported.
Liu said she received a call from her boyfriend who was drunk, telling her he intended to commit suicide.

This prompted her to drive from her home in Yuncheng, also in Shanxi, to Hejin to pick him up.
At first, Liu comforted her boyfriend, but he did not listen and they ended up quarrelling.
During the row, Liu said: “You have been saying you want to die for the whole night. Did you die yet?”
This is suspected to have led the man to leap out of the moving car.
The boyfriend was pronounced dead after a week of medical treatment.
The police applied to the local procuratorate authority to ratify the arrest of Liu on a charge of negligent homicide.

However, prosecutors said there was a controversy surrounding the nature of the case regarding the special relationship between Liu and the man.
With the help of the mediation department under the procuratorate authority, Liu and her boyfriend’s family held negotiations before reaching an agreement that Liu should pay them 218,000 yuan in compensation.
After Liu paid the money, the man’s family issued a letter of forgiveness to her.
Prosecutors said Liu’s negligence was “obviously slight”, and a decision was made not to arrest her. The police then dropped the case.

The authorities also instigated a judicial remedy procedure for the man’s family due to their dire financial situation, the report said.
The news soon went viral on mainland social media.
“The case shows it is vital to find a person with stable emotions to date. Those who resort to extreme measures are horrible,” said one online observer.
“I do not understand why the woman needed to pay so much compensation. She is kind enough to him. She tried to calm him down for so many hours. Anyone in these circumstances would get irritable,” said another.
