Earthquake measuring 6.0 hits Sichuan in southwestern China with only a few seconds warning beforehand

Residents in southwestern China were warned just seconds before a 6.0 Richter scale earthquake hit the region early Thursday morning, local media reported.

The earthquake epicentre was in Luxian County in Sichuan province and killed three people while injuring 60 others. About 7,000 residents have been evacuated, the county’s government said.

Local TV stations warned of the imminent quake, accompanied by sirens, to residents of Sichuan cities including Luzhou, Leshan, Yibing and Chengdu and the nearby Yunnan city of Zhaotong which borders the county, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

People who had installed The China Earthquake Administration alert app on their phones also received the quake warnings shortly before the disaster happened.

Wang Tun, director of Chengdu Institute of Care-life, encouraged people to install earthquake alert apps, the report said.
