‘Why pass on his genes?’: online shock in China as 6 weeks pregnant woman stays with boyfriend who secretly laced drink in bid to abort their baby

  • Boyfriend laces drink with potentially lethal cocktail of medicines and gives it to girlfriend who was 6 weeks pregnant
  • Success of pregnancy still hangs in balance as online observers condemn boyfriend, urge woman to leave him

A Beijing woman has gone viral on mainland social media over her decision to continue her pregnancy despite her boyfriend’s attempts to force an abortion.

In an online video posted last week, the woman said she was six weeks pregnant and explained how her boyfriend attempted to terminate the pregnancy by secretly giving her medication that could harm the fetus, according to a report in Qilu Evening News.

“Last night, he made me a drink of brown sugar water, into which he secretly added mifepristone, Huoxue Tong and Ganmao Tong without my knowledge,” she said in the video.

Mifepristone is a drug typically used to terminate early-stage pregnancies. Huoxue Tong is a herbal medicine to boost blood circulation that pregnant women are advised to avoid, while Ganmao Tong is a cold medicine.

Her boyfriend confessed the medications were intended to induce abortion and could potentially lead to fetal deformities, prompting the woman to seek emergency treatment at a hospital.

“The doctor prescribed me medication to maintain the pregnancy, saying that it was still too early to confirm whether the pregnancy could be saved. All we can do now is wait,” she said.

“I am extremely nervous, my blood pressure has risen to 150,” she added, according to Juliu Video.

However, the woman’s story did not draw sympathy from online observers.

Instead, many were aghast at her decision to continue the pregnancy after learning of her boyfriend’s actions.

“Why continue the pregnancy? You should quickly abort and run! Don’t be foolish, OK?” said one commenter.

“Does the man hold a throne or possess incredible wealth that justifies you risking both you and your child’s future to stay with him? God has given you a chance to escape from someone who doesn’t love you, yet you’ve failed to seize it. You should go to the police and report him for poisoning!” another said.

“The saying, ‘Leave the father, keep the child’, refers to capable single women who can choose high-quality genes,” a third commenter said.

“Your partner dislikes you and even poisoned you, why are you insisting on passing on his inferior genes? Are you sharing this to invite condemnation from the public?” the same commenter added.

In November last year, a woman in Hebei province in northern China made headlines after she aborted her five-month-old fetus, placed it in a foam box and mailed it to her fiancé’s family.

It was later reported that the man’s family pressured her to accept an unfavourable prenuptial agreement after they learned she was pregnant and unlikely to leave the relationship.

They reportedly demanded she accept only a ceremonial wedding without a marriage certificate, forgo the right to a bride price and give up any claims to the fiancé’s house.
