As Shanghai continues to endure an indefinite lockdown due to a surge in Covid-19 cases, a man in the city has been using a drone to send groceries to a nearby resident, earning him the nickname of “China’s Good Neighbour”.

The woman who received the care packages, who documented the story on Douyin, China’s TikTok, said the man, who went by the pseudonym Afei, used his drone to deliver daily essentials such as lettuce, cucumber, oranges, fish and bottles of Vitamin C.

At the end of a video clip, a certificate of merit with Chinese characters for “China’s Good Neighbour” appeared on-screen, with the woman heard saying, “I am so happy”.

Food security has been a core complaint from residents caught in Shanghai’s lockdown, which started on March 28 and was meant to be two 5-day regional lockdowns but has transformed into an indefinite citywide stay-at-home order.

On Monday, the city issued its first loosening of rules, with a few communities being assigned as “precaution zones” where residents can move around within a designated area.

As for the deliveries, Afei sent his neighbour a small bundle of lettuce on the first day and, after she told him through WeChat that there was a shortage of fruits at her home, he sent her half a cucumber on the second day.
