The touching story of a 10-year-old girl in China who saved 2 yuan (28 US cents) every day for three years so she could buy a birthday present for her grandfather, has warmed hearts on mainland social media.

The girl from Zhejiang province in eastern China, spent 2,000 yuan (US$280) on a gold bracelet for her grandfather, the entire amount of her pocket money saved over three years, China News reported.

In a video clip, the girl and her mother are seen visiting a local jewellery shop. After choosing a bracelet, she opens her piggy bank and takes her savings out of it.

“I only have 2,000 yuan, what can I buy for my grandfather?” The girl asks the saleswoman.

As she stares at the jewellery on display inside the cabinet, she is shown red and black gold bracelets.
