An eight-year-old boy in eastern China has ignited a heated online discussion after he chopped his mother’s gold necklace into small pieces and gave them to classmates as gifts.

The boy’s unusual act, which was only discovered after the month it was carried out, left his mother angry and amused while his father beat him as a punishment because they could not retrieve the gold, the Dianshi News reported.

The family live in Zaozhuang, Shandong province, eastern China.

“Maybe you think it is a funny fabricated tale, but it is true,” the boy’s mother, surnamed Sun, said on social media on November 28.

She said she only found out when her daughter told her that a classmate of her brother said the boy gave him a piece of gold.

The boy admitted that the gold he gave away came from his mother’s necklace.

The couple spent hours checking surveillance footage and eventually saw the boy opening Sun’s drawer and taking out a marriage souvenir gold necklace bought by her husband.
