It seems yoga has gone existential with Alexander Medin. The yoga manager of the Landmark Mandarin Oriental has been contemplating its context within today's urban environment. Instead of an essay, though, he's come up with a whimsical calendar to examine that issue.
'Yoga is obviously here to stay,' he says. 'What we want to do with the calendar is question what yoga is in the 21st century? There's a diversity of schools all claiming to be yoga and it has obviously become a multi-branched tree. We want to emphasise that yoga can be incorporated into daily life. It's all-embracing instead of a holier-than-thou thing.'
Medin knows what he is talking about. He has studied Sanskrit to understand the original yoga writings. Even now, he is on his way to India for a refresher course.
His calendar by photographer Gerhard Joren is out now.
