With reference to the letter, “Ukraine stands to lose more if war continues” (August 26), I cannot but feel your correspondent’s lack of understanding of the resolve of Central and Eastern European people. Having just returned from a two-month tour of Finland, the Baltic states and Poland, I couldn’t but notice the blue and yellow flags of Ukraine on government buildings, and at traffic roundabouts.
One only has to visit the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights, often referred to as the KGB museum, in Vilnius to realise that these people will not be going back to the yoke of the soviets or anyone else, now or anytime in the future, and will fight to preserve their freedom.

This war has nothing to do with Nato but everything to do with Vladimir Putin’s personal ambition to restore an empire. What it takes for this to end is simple. Russia must return to pre-1989 boundaries as set out by Mikhail Gorbachev and let Ukrainians live their life.

Be fair to Israel
“What Albert Camus might think about Palestinian suffering and the West’s responsibility for it” (August 26) marshals emotions but neglects some facts. It does not mention that many agreements have been negotiated between the Palestinians’ representatives and Israel with the aid of international interlocutors that have been scuppered by the Palestinians.
