Much has been said about last week’s meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

While some argue that the Ukrainian president needs to rebuild the relationship with the United States, in fact, it is the US which needs to assure the rest of the world that is a trustable ally in times of conflict.

The new US administration so far has decided to isolate itself from the rest of the world on the premise that it has been taken advantage of for many years. That is certainly debatable and surely it is not the fault of China, for example, that it has provided goods at a price cheaper than the US can to satisfy American consumer wants. Similarly, those consumers’ purchase of European cars, perhaps due to the superior quality, is not the fault of the European community.

However, Europe does need to strengthen its military capabilities, probably through the manufacture of its own weaponry, and not rely on purchases from foreign manufacturers that have benefited hugely from the many conflicts we have endured.
