Letters | As Hongkongers unite around Tai Po, the fire probe must deliver
Readers discuss how to sustain social cohesion in Hong Kong, the kindness of Hongkongers, and why the world must respond to the Venezuela raid

As someone born and raised in Hong Kong, I have followed the news on the Tai Po fire from California, where I have been based for decades. The tragedy will have lasting traumatic effects. But it has also created social cohesion and unity. Sustaining the unity will depend on a transparent and comprehensive government-appointed investigation.
The committee is expected to have eight areas of focus, from fire safety to potential collusion in the construction process. What are the strengths and weaknesses of coordination across the construction industry, different government departments and property owners? What are the responsibilities and rights of property owners in the upkeep of buildings? I hope the investigation will answer these questions.
If systemic problems are found, I hope the government will follow through and make improvements. After all, social cohesion and unity are built on trust, not perfection. It is built on a transparent government that admits and learns from mistakes.
Equally, I hope Hongkongers will play a supportive role – giving credit where it is due, showing appreciation when it is warranted and offering feedback that is constructive.
