Letters | Hong Kong airport has recovered well from the pandemic
Readers discuss the competitiveness of HKIA, the impact of the medical fee hike, and the success of the high-speed rail link

Since 2023, HKIA has seen a robust recovery and growth in traffic volume and destination network. The progress in 2025 was particularly noteworthy, with 30 global destinations added to our network. HKIA is currently connected to about 220 destinations around the world and the Chinese mainland. Some 140 airlines operate in Hong Kong, exceeding the pre-pandemic level. Our network of destinations compares favourably to most major airports in the region.
But competition remains very intense and we remain vigilant in our efforts to further enhance our competitiveness.
We expect to release consolidated air traffic figures in 2025 soon. Passenger traffic is expected to exceed 61 million trips. As we raced towards the finishing line last year, we were boosted by a strong Christmas peak, during which traffic surpassed 200,000 passenger trips on eight days.
On the other hand, in 2025 HKIA was once again crowned the world’s busiest cargo airport, the 14th time since 2010. We are one of the few major airports in the world busy with both passenger and cargo traffic.
