Hong Kong is likely to drop a Sars alert, which has been in place since December, after a meeting today with Guangdong health officials to review measures to prevent the disease.

The  level 1 alert - the lowest level - was raised on New Year's Eve after Guangdong reported a  suspected Sars case in a television producer. Three other  cases were detected in the next month.

'We have been on level 1 alert for some time now. Hong Kong and Guangdong will discuss the Sars situation and deactivate the alert,' a Department of Health spokesman said yesterday.

The Guangdong health department relaxed Sars contingency measures, more than a month after the fourth and last confirmed Sars case was announced on January 31.

Director of Health Lam Ping-yan  will lead the Hong Kong delegation to the meeting in Guangzhou.

The six-member delegation, which includes Deputy Director of Health Leung Pak-yin  and Hospital Authority senior executive manager Liu Shao-haei,  will return to Hong Kong tomorrow.

Under the Sars contingency plan, Hong Kong hoists the level 1 alert when there is a confirmed case of Sars outside the special administrative region.

People who develop  pneumonia symptoms within 10 days of returning from Guangdong are monitored as suspected Sars cases.

The tourism sector, schools, public housing estates and private clinics also have activated Sars emergency responses.

The Hospital Authority had asked everyone at hospitals - staff, patients and visitors - to wear masks.

Dr Lam has said anti-Sars measures imposed at border checkpoints might be scaled down. The measures, in place since last spring's Sars outbreak, include asking travellers to make health declarations and taking their temperatures at Hong Kong's entry points.
