Andrew Sun

As Peak Tower's general manager, he's conquered Victoria Peak; now Martyn Sawyer wants to tackle the world's four toughest deserts.

The next challenge for the 49-year-old, who has lived in Hong Kong for 21 years, is to run a series of races totalling 1,000km on four continents, enduring the hottest, windiest, driest and coldest places on Earth.

Mr Sawyer's first test will be the Sahara:  a 250km, seven-day foot race across the Egyptian desert starting on October 29. This will be followed by similar treks in the Gobi Desert,  the Atacama Plains  in Chile and, last, an Antarctica run.

'My family thinks I am going through a mid-life crisis,' he said.

'I am going to do this because ... actually I have no real idea why I am going to do this except I want to. As I approach 50 I am fast coming to the belief that we should all try and do things that interest or challenge us.'
