Research-orientated programme. Students work under the supervision of a professor on a topic and take a minimum of two courses recognised by the graduate panel, substitutable by special studies. The MPhil programme requires at least 24 units together with a written thesis for graduation. The PhD programme requires at least 36 units together with a written thesis for graduation. Designed to provide students with an understanding and appreciation of issues and skills in environmental management, the course examines environmental policies, strategies and management systems, with a focus on the recognition and development of sustainable environmental management in both urban and non-urban environments. Students may also undertake some study of specific environmental problems, research methods, geographical information systems and environmental economics, philosophy or politics, and may include a research project in their degree. The course is global in scope, but case study material will draw especially on the experience of Australia and other Asia-Pacific nations. Requirements The equivalent of an Australian bachelor's degree with 2nd class honours or better (four years of study) undertaken in the field of study you intend to pursue in your proposed master's programme. This course is concerned with the interactions between humans and their bio-geological contexts with the aim of reintegrating the two with the insights offered by both the humanities and the sciences. Research emphasises the processes behind human-environment interactions, the development of policy, and the implementation of management strategies favourable to the environment. The programme offers a primary insight into the nature of the environmental issues through core coursework units involving interdisciplinary research experience and an understanding of the social construction of the issues. The course objective is to integrate management techniques with the technicalities in environmental protection and public health study for the effective maintenance of a sustainable and healthy environment. Students studying for a PhD are appointed a supervisor who will advise on the academic and administrative requirements. The degree requires a course of advanced study and research of usually three to four years full time, including the production of a thesis. Candidates will be required to submit and present their full proposal within a year, and are expected to present a thesis within five years of registration. Requirements Due to the broad, interdisciplinary nature of environmental studies, students may be required to take a further candidacy exam at the discretion of the director and their supervisory committee. PhD candidates are normally expected to have obtained a postgraduate degree, preferably at master's level. Diverse research projects are available that often involve collaboration with other research groups across biology and chemistry. Areas include assessment and remediation of contaminated land; uptake of heavy metals in soils by plants and its implications for risk assessment; uncertainty of measurements caused by primary sampling of food and of the environment; biological effects of various classes of environmental contaminants in fish; fate of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in the aquatic environment; geochemical cycling and reactivity of contaminants in estuarine and coastal systems; behaviour of radionuclides and heavy metals in the environment. Requirements A good first degree in environmental science, chemistry, geography, geology, biology or related subjects.
