Gillian Chung Yan-tung of the Canto-pop duo Twins went through the darkest period of her life after being caught up in scandal when sex photos from Edison Chen Koon-hei's laptop were posted on the internet in early 2008. The singer-actress lost a series of jobs including an appearance at the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony and roles in movies such as Chen Kaige's Mei Lanfang and Oliver Stone's W. 
The 29-year-old  is finally back in young director Heiward Mak's new drama Ex, about a young woman's relationship with her former boyfriend (William Chan Wai-ting). 
Ex is the first movie you've made since the photo scandal. Does it have a different meaning for you?
Actually, the first movie I made [after the scandal] was Jeffrey Lau Chun-wai's comedy, Just Another Pandora's Box, but that was a cameo role. I'm really grateful to Chapman To [the producer of Ex) and Jeffrey for giving me a chance.
Chapman has been very supportive. He talked to my manager and said he wanted  this movie to be my comeback role. No one dared to take the risk. But he and Jeffrey thought that if someone took the first step and gave me a movie role, others would start to offer  acting work again.  
Jeffrey Lau has also been very supportive all the time. The Fantastic Water Babes, which was filmed few years ago, was our first collaboration. Since then, we've kept in touch, even during my darkest days. No matter how busy he was, he would take me to dinner and talk to me about adversity in his life. His situation was even more worse than mine but, look at him, he is really fine now. So I think you can stand up again if you work really hard and overcome the obstacles.
I love making movies because I learn so much from the process and from older actors.
Are you and Chapman close friends? 
We are colleagues, but we were not that close [before filming Ex]. Now, we talk a lot. Chapman has changed a lot after becoming a Buddhist and his wife has changed too. Both are very kind-hearted, considerate and care about other people. And he also thinks I've changed a lot. 
How have you changed in the last couple of years?
My life used to be occupied with work and my schedule was always packed. I would do my part professionally but wasn't really into it. But now, I treasure every job.
Now, I won't leave immediately after completing my part; I  stay and talk to the crew and the music producer to learn more about filming and recording. 
I ask them if there is anything else that I can help with during the process. I like to watch the filming; I think I can pick up a lot from it.
Personally, I've become more gentle; I used to be a bit harsh with people without realising it. I followed Medecins Sans Frontieres volunteers on a visit to Sichuan [after the earthquake] and met some of the victims. They have had to rebuild their homes and face the threat of earthquakes every day, but they still feel grateful for life and face adversity positively. When compared with matters of life and death, I realised what happened to me was not a big matter. The MSF volunteers are really great too.
Did you feel any pressure when filming Ex?
I was nervous because everyone around me was young and green. I'd never worked with them before. Fortunately, Chapman is an actor-turned-producer, he knows how an actor thinks. I think the director is talented. She's only 25 years old and has achieved so much. But sometimes our views differed. 
Although we are both part of the post-80s generation - I don't really like this term, it's a negative stereotype -  our thinking can be very different.
Every night, no matter how late it was, she would call and communicate with me. She wanted to know more about how I felt during the filming and if there was anything  that needed to be improved. 
This was the first time I had to rehearse for a movie. 
How did you feel when you were suspended from those films? How did you get through that time?
At first, I didn't want to face anything or anyone. I just wanted to escape, although many people were very supportive and would text me from time to time. The situation lasted quite a long time, about six months. There was news about me in the papers every day, it was really hard to handle. My family didn't allow me to read news on the internet, they didn't want me to be influenced by it. But I followed it on my mobile phone. I thought I needed to know what was happening.
Support from my family and friends was really important. At the time, my mother said she would rather I quit if it really upset me. But that only made me more determined not to give up; I  joined show business because I wanted to give my family a better life.
I went to Japan to learn dance. My two dance teachers were very good to me and did what they could to protect me. At the time, I still couldn't look people in the eye.  I pulled my hat down so nobody could see me and I couldn't see anything either. But gradually, I gained confidence. They made me feel comfortable and I started to leave my hat off. My teachers were really surprised. When they had an open class, I even danced in front of the other students. 
I took lessons in gymnastics, English and kung fu, starting with the most fundamental skills. It was really tough. But I really appreciate that my kung fu master  hardly charged me a cent. My English teacher, an ex-colleague's husband, also taught me for free. Many people gave me support.
You and your Twins partner Charlene Choi Cheuk-yin are going solo now. How do you see your future? 
I have to take it slowly. After all, we've been a team for many years. I need some time to pick up and work as a solo artist.
