After romantic comedies 2 Become 1 and Hooked on You, filmmaker Law Wing-cheong  tried his hand at making a thriller. His new movie, Punished, portrays a tycoon (Anthony Wong Chau-sang) who is overwhelmed by pain after losing his daughter in a kidnapping and seeks revenge against those involved. With its violent fistfights and brutal torture scenes, the movie premiered at the Hong Kong International Film Festival last month and opened in cinemas  this week.
Law joined Johnnie To Kei-fung's Milkyway Image as associate director and film editor in 1997. In 2002, he won the Golden Horse Film Award for best editing with Running Out of Time 2. In 2006, he made his directing debut,  2 Become 1, and was nominated for best new director at the Hong Kong Film Awards.  
What inspired you to make a thriller?  
 In the beginning, I discussed filming a movie about a kidnapping with Mr To. I wanted it to talk about the people in the movie; the kidnapping and killing are not my focus. It's not an action-packed thriller, after all. I mainly focused on the casting, concentrating more on the interpretation of the actors. 
What I wanted to say through the story is that everyone has a ruler in their heart that is used to measure other people. In the movie, the tycoon is a tyrant and his wife, his children and employees have to follow his wishes. People want others to follow what they think  is right. But is it the best for them? 
 Are you pleased with the performance of the actors?
 I'm quite satisfied with everyone's performance in the movie. I  picked Anthony to play the tycoon because he is one of the few actors in Hong Kong who could look like a powerful businessman. I'm glad  he took the role. 
We had a lot of discussions about how to play the character in different scenes. People had said he was hard to work with, but I found him very co-operative. I've worked with Richie Jen [Hsien-chi]  several times. I think he can handle different kinds of characters, so I asked him to play the bodyguard.
For the side cast, I prefer to use actors who do not appear in movies very often. When I flipped through some magazines, I spotted Candy Lo [Hau-yam].  It reminded me of her performance in one of her movies. I thought she would be able to play the character. People might know Charlie Cho Cha-lee  as a comedian, or a category-three actor. But this time he plays a super-loyal employee. I hope it surprises the audience. 
 The character of Richie Jen is voiced by a local actor. Is that because Jen's Cantonese is not good enough?
 Richie has worked with Mr To and I many times. He is always very dedicated and nice to work with. He voices all his characters in the Putonghua versions. But this time, the role he plays is a very local personality. I thought it was better  to get a local actor to voice the role.  We talked to Richie and he was OK with that.  
 Did To give you any advice and suggestions when you shot this movie?
 He made some comments when we were developing the story and after we finished the first draft of the script. After that, he didn't interfere in filming and production because he knows that would only have messed things up. We didn't want him to visit us during filming. He understood that. He took a look at the film when we'd done the editing. Where anything needed to be fine-tuned,  he gave us a day or two to redo the scenes. 
 How would you describe your relationship with To?
 He is my teacher and a father figure. I started  working with him back when we were at a television station. It's been more than two decades. I've learned a lot from him and still have a lot to learn from him. He's very knowledgeable about drama and movies. He knows how to tell  a story with images, not just the script. That's what I admire most about him. He is very good at guiding actors to interpret their  roles and make a character different. That's very different from a lot of other directors.
 Were you interested in television and movies at a very young age?
 Not at all. I wasn't a movie buff when I was young. I was just looking for a job after graduation. I started out making promos at TVB when I was 18. After watching people making television dramas for a few years, I wanted to try being an assistant director. So I asked for a move and later became an assistant director and director.
I quit my television director job and joined Mr To's Milkyway in 1997 because I thought I could learn more in the movie world. At the television station, I was the one shouting at people as I was the director; when I entered the movie world, I became the one being shouted at. To is famous for shouting at people. That's his personality. We're used to it. I tried hard to do better so that he wouldn't shout at me. Of course, he doesn't shout at me any more.
 What's your next project? 
 Last month, I  made a movie about the 72 martyrs of the  Huanghuagang Uprising.  I also want to make a movie about a sex therapist, to talk about sex and love. We are still developing the story.
