I am writing in response to the article “Hong Kong must reindustrialise to reinvent its economy”. Professor Heiwai Tang raised a valid point that Hong Kong cannot provide enough knowledge-based jobs for the highly educated labour force, especially the younger generation in Hong Kong. This is resulting in a large amount of lost economic potential, as such workers cannot find enough potentially high-value-added career paths in Hong Kong.

However, I differ with the writer’s point regarding the reindustrialisation of Hong Kong. Hong Kong has long been a prosperous city with a knowledge-based economy, and it has always had a net surplus of highly qualified workers. With a such a labour force, it would be a more rational choice to put greater efforts into improving and creating more job opportunities on the technological and development side of the spectrum.
