CrossFit Regionals may return as continental competitions, CrossFit Games director Dave Castro has hinted.
“Regionals are so 2018. 2021 is all about continents. More info coming soon via games.crossfit.com,” he posted on Instagram.
The attached map suggested at least one competition in six continents.
Athletes used to qualify for the CrossFit Games via Regionals. They would earn a spot in the Regionals by finishing high in the Open, a five-week online competition where athletes upload their scores remotely.

There were a number of regionals in the US to accommodate the high number of athletes, with one in South America, Europe, the Middle East and Australia, which included Asia-based athletes.
The Regionals were replaced in 2018 by Sanctionals, privately owned events offering a route to the Games for the winner. At the same time, the top Open athlete from each country earned a spot at the Games, expanding the field from 35 to hundreds of athletes.
In 2020, due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, the top 20 men and top 20 from the Open and 10 men and women from the Sanctionals competed in a remote leg of the CrossFit Games. The top five then competed at in-person finals in California, with Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey winning.
