The CrossFit Open 21.1 has delivered unlikely leaders who could herald the next generation of superstars. Of last year’s five CrossFit Games finalists, just two are in the top 10. Four-time Fittest on Earth Tia-Clair Toomey is in sixth, while teenage sensation Haley Adams sits eighth.

Open scores are still pending ratification. Scaled versions of the workout, designed to allow people without access to a gym in Covid-19 to take part, has created confusion. As a result, some scores have been incorrectly submitted and will be amended.

But as it stands, the leader in the women’s is Norwegian Andrea Solberg in a time of 10 minutes, 50 seconds. Last year, the 25-year-old finished 97th. She has never made it to the Games. Sitting just behind her is Johanna Julia Juliusdottir, 25, (11:02) joining the ranks of exceptional Icelanders. Last year, she finished 232nd. Her best finish in the Open is 163 in 2017. She competed previously in the Games as part of a team that finished 28th in 2017.

Sitting in third is the first familiar name, Danielle Brandon, 25, from the US in a time of 11:05. She finished 10th at the Games in 2019, her sole appearance. Her best Open finish is 16th in 2019.

The men’s side of the competition is equally surprising currently. Felipe Costa, 20, from Argentina, is in the lead in a time of 10 minutes, 54 seconds. This is his first Open.
