Runners in Hong Kong are trying out different face masks and improvised face coverings so they can still train during the latest coronavirus restrictions. The government has put in place rules requiring Hongkongers to wear masks in all public places, inside and out, and even during exercise.

Those who fail to comply could face a fine of up to HK$5,000 so there is plenty of incentive to cover up, but the sensation of running with a mask on is a bit like altitude training with few of the benefits.

William Hayward, a 298km Hong Kong Four Trails Ultra Challenge survivor and runner-up at Big Dog’s Backyard Ultra, started running with a Buff, a cotton tube normally used for staying warm, over his face.

“A Buff is good to start but it does get hard to breathe when it gets wet,” he said. “I switched to the Watsons 3D foam masks. They are pretty breathable, keep their shape, and you can wring them out if they get wet.”

“I’ve slowed down a bit because of the masks but seem to still be running long distances,” he said, adding he has signed up to a virtual challenge hosted by race organiser Lazarus Lake, famed for inventing the Barkley Marathons and creating the Backyard Ultra, so Hayward needs to run 480km in August whether in a mask or not.
