Hong Kong are on track to top pool B after a huge 47-0 win over Taiwan handed the hosts two wins from two matches on the first day of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series at Hong Kong Football Club on Friday.
A win in their final match over Sri Lanka will cap a perfect day from the hosts, who ran in seven tries against Taiwan.
Ryan Meacheam was dynamic in crossing twice and Alex McQueen, Lee Jones and Cado Lee Ka-to were also amongst the points.
Hong Kong were equally as impressive in their first match after the home side recorded a 36-0 win over Malaysia.
Ben Rimene was particularly damaging with a try and three conversions as Hong Kong opened up their opponents with ambitious passing.
Max Woodward, Ryan Meacheam, Michael Coverdale, Salom Yiu Kam-shing and Rowan Varty also found the line.
In other men’s matches, China posted a surprise 12-10 win over a virtually unknown Japan side and also knocked off South Korea 19-17 to sit undefeated at the top of pool A.
Hong Kong’s women also made it two from two with a hard fought 7-0 win over Singapore to ensure their final match against Japan will decide who tops the pool.
It was an early Aggie Poon Pak-yan try and conversion that got Hong Kong over the line, with the match descending into a dour defensive struggle after the opening minutes.
Earlier, Hong Kong made a blistering start to the tournament after beating Guam 29-0.
Three quick tries established a 19-0 half-time lead before the home side pulled further ahead in heavy rain after the break to seal the win win, with Colleen Tjosvold the star with two tries.
Aggie Poon Pak-yan, Nathasha Olson-Thorne and Ivy Kwong Sau-yan also crossed, while Poon slotted two conversions.
