China's 'Invisible Man'

Tom Wang

Chinese artist and photographer, Liu Bolin, is known for painting himself to camouflage into backgrounds, earning him the nickname “The Invisible Man.”

Liu’s Hiding in the City series has him “disappearing” into environments such as construction zones, retail spaces and historical landmarks as a “silent protest” and a form of social and political critique of his country’s practices since its Cultural Revolution.

In September 2014, Liu invited 78 people to participate in his work in New York, one of the volunteers was Wilbur Ross, US president-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for commerce secretary, and private equity billionaire.

“He came around 9 in the morning,” Liu said, recalling the day he first met Ross. “I thought he was a very nice old man, not talkative, but friendly. We shook hands, said hello, and then got down to work.
