Hong Kong Observatory lowers amber signal, ends thunderstorm warning

Hong Kong’s weather authorities ended a lengthy thunderstorm warning on Sunday afternoon after earlier issuing an amber rainstorm alert amid heavy rains.
The Hong Kong Observatory said heavy rain exceeding 30 millimetres within an hour was expected across the city when it issued the amber signal at 10.05am, warning of potential flooding in low-lying areas. The alert was withdrawn after exactly two hours.
The thunderstorm warning, first issued at 7.05am, means isolated, squally storms are expected to occur throughout the city. It was finally withdrawn at 1.30pm.
The Labour Department warned employers and workers not to carry out electrical work in areas affected by the rainstorms and take necessary safety precautions.
The rain is expected to let up by afternoon, with some sunny intervals in between, according to the Observatory.
