MISSING PERSONS

Voice 1: People go missing every day. Some just vanish into thin air and sadly are never seen again by their family and friends. Listen to these five stories of people who went missing but happily turned up again.

Voice 2: John Black died in a swimming accident in Sydney in March 2003. Or so his family were told. Police accidently identified a body as his and John was cremated by his grieving wife and two sons. But John Black had actually suffered a head injury while swimming and had been taken to hospital. He suffered memory loss and could not tell officials who he was. He was taken to a home and lived there for five years until one of his sons identified him appearing a television programme about missing people.

Voice 1: Fifteen-year-old Carol North disappeared from her New York home in August, 2002. A massive police search was organised but Carol was not found until 10 months later. Police found her wandering in a street near her home. She had been kidnapped by a man who had broken into the family flat. After her sudden release, Carol refused to tell the police anything about the man who had held her captive.

Voice 2: Twins Ling and Ying were abandoned by their mother in a back street in Shanghai soon after their birth. They were both adopted from an orphanage over a period of 10 months by different families in America. The families were not told about the existence of the other twin sister. The two girls were reunited after their mothers met in an online adoption chat room. The twins live more than 2,400 kilometres apart in the USA but see each other as often as the families can arrange visits.

Voice 1: After the tsunami destroyed his home village in Sri Lanka in December 2005, 'Baby 81' was claimed by many different families desperate to find their missing children. After many months, the baby boy was reunited with his real parents after DNA testing proved without any doubt whose baby he really was.

Voice 2: In 1996, Johnny West abducted Tony, the nine-month-old son of his girl-friend in Los Angeles. The man and the baby seemed to vanish off the face of the earth and the California police could find no clues to their whereabouts. But the search did not stop and the case was not closed. In December, 2007, FBI officers found West at his mother’s home in San Francisco with Tony. The twelve year old boy was reunited with his mother shortly afterwards.
