Restaurant review: Blackwood Cafe & Bar, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong – avocado on toast and Mexican dishes from under US$10

  • We loved the salmon tacos and beef quesadilla at Blackwood Cafe & Bar in Sheung Wan, which also does a mean avocado on toast
  • The roadside tables are a great place to relax, unwind and people-watch

Set among the small antique shops on Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan, Blackwood Cafe & Bar serves up all-day breakfast, snacks and late-night drinks.

My friends and I visited the cafe for lunch on a recent quiet afternoon. Its all-day menu features egg and bagel breakfasts, soups, salads, burgers, and Mexican dishes. We ordered avocado toast (HK$72, US$9.30), beef quesadilla (HK$128) and salmon taco (HK$128).

The toast was served on an extremely hot plate. Although the waitress had warned us, my friend burned his hand twice even before we started to dig in.

The creamy mashed avocado with light seasoning came on sourdough toast and was topped with two eggs sunny side up. Thanks to the hot plate, the toast stayed crisp and created a nice contrast with the runny egg yolk.

Next came the soft tacos with smoked salmon and slaw. Juicy, flavourful and light, the small hand-sized tacos came topped with chipotle sauce, sour cream, tomato salsa, avocado, mixed cheese and fresh herbs. The smoked salmon was of high quality and we loved its mellow salted flavour and meaty texture.

Served last, the beef quesadilla with its stringy melted cheese and eye-catching colourful filling was my favourite dish.

Inside the warm tortilla were mixed bell peppers, onion, mushrooms, cheese and minced beef that was moist, tender and peppery. The strong peppery flavour was muted when we topped the quesadilla with salsa, guacamole and sour cream, which was on the side. You may want to have a taste before you add the sauce.

We enjoyed our light meal on a high bar table set near the road, where we were able to watch people as they window-shopped the antique stores. It’s a great place to get yourself a coffee, relax and unwind.

On weekdays, the cafe also serves set lunches, with soup of the day and a choice of main and drink from HK$72 to HK$128. Mains range from burger and rice bowl to burrito and quesadilla.
