10 restaurants in Hong Kong and Macau newly awarded Bib Gourmands for good-value gourmet meals by Michelin Guide include one in a Kowloon housing estate

  • The Michelin Guide Hong Kong and Macau 2024 has added 10 establishments to its list of Bib Gourmand restaurants recognised for offering good value gourmet food
  • Seven of the 10 are in Hong Kong, and include a Vietnamese noodle bar and a Cantonese restaurant in a Kowloon housing estate

Ahead of the unveiling of the latest guide to Michelin-star restaurants in Hong Kong and Macau on March 14, the dining guide has announced selections for its Bib Gourmand category, which highlight venues offering “value for money gourmet experiences”.

According to Michelin, the criteria for good value equates to a three-course meal (drinks not included) for a maximum price of HK$400 (US$51) in Hong Kong or 400 patacas in Macau. The category also features street food and takeaway-only establishments.

The updated list in the 16th edition of the guide features 10 newcomers, 7 in Hong Kong and 3 in Macau; the additions bring the number of Bib Gourmand restaurants in the Michelin guide to 67 in Hong Kong and 10 in Macau.

The majority of the new entrants are restaurants serving Chinese favourites, such as Sang Kee Foods in Sheung Wan, famed for its Chiu Chow-style marinated goose. Cheung Hing Kee in Tsim Sha Tsui, a multi-branch venue specialising in shenjianbao, or pan-fried soup buns, was also awarded a Bib Gourmand; its signature item is described as “springy, brimming with filling and crispy on the bottom”.

Man Yuen Restaurant in Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon, also joins the list. Located within a shopping centre on the Tin Ma Court public housing estate – one of Hong Kong’s oldest – the unusually spacious restaurant has quickly became a favourite among food lovers and influencers in the year since its launch, due in no small part to the popularity of founder CK Poon Kin-wai, who was previously the general manager of three-Michelin-star Forum Restaurant in Causeway Bay.

Michelin describes Man Yuen as “a newcomer to the East Kowloon dining scene … tucked away in a public housing estate, but that doesn’t stop diners coming in droves from near and far for quality Cantonese dishes made with fresh ingredients”.

“We’re a little off the beaten path, with lots of parking for guests travelling in from further away, and a high-quality menu that does not break the bank,” Poon told the Post in July last year.

Twins Liangpi Limited’s new Mong Kok venue also makes the list after relocating from Prince Edward last year. Unlike the original location that was takeaway-only, the new premises offer a dine-in option.

The brand will soon launch a branch in BaseHall 02, the high-end food court in Central’s Jardine House.

An Choi, a modest Vietnamese restaurant in Sheung Wan that is popular for its freshly baked banh mi (Vietnamese baguette sandwiches) and frequently rotating menu of traditional noodle soups, was also awarded its first Bib Gourmand just under a year after opening.

Chef May Chow, of Little Bao restaurant, congratulated the venue on social media, saying the meal she ate there was one of the most delicious she has had in Hong Kong and that “I could see myself going back often!”

Little Napoli, a pizzeria in Happy Valley, is also recognised – having just placed 24th in the newly announced 50 Top Pizza Asia-Pacific rankings. Founder and chef Gavino Pilo, who is from Naples, house-ferments the dough used for his pizzas daily.

In Macau, the three additions to the Bib Gourmand category are Kapok, serving Cantonese food; Restaurante Litoral, a stalwart of Macanese and Portuguese cooking; and Son Tak Kong, which opened in 1979 and made its name perfecting labour-intensive Shun Tak cuisine.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin guides, said: “These 77 Bib Gourmand food establishments not only showcase the thriving food culture that permeates Hong Kong and Macau, but also highlight the many possibilities gourmets looking for great culinary experiences at affordable prices can enjoy.”
