Opinion | Charities need professional staff and funding to fulfil their mission

There is a strongly held belief among some donors that charity workers should be volunteers who work for love and fresh air. Charity workers still have bills to pay, though, and the sector needs skilled, competent professionals who love their job and are paid fairly.

Hong Kong’s international, private and DSS schools are obliged to offer scholarships in exchange for land from the government. Hong Kong’s marginalised ethnic minority students would benefit from admission to these schools.

The current administration is taking unprecedented steps to help Hong Kong’s minorities, as are business leaders, but attitudes need to change among the general population.

Hong Kong has a moral responsibility to support all children – including non-Chinese-speaking special needs youngsters. The Education Bureau must take urgent steps to address the acute shortage of school places for this group.
