Letters | Loyal fans of Hong Kong airport are legion and won’t give up stopping over

  • Ultra long-haul flights are a prospect not many travellers relish, especially when a stopover in Hong Kong can be so comfortable
I read with interest your article about Qantas’ Project Sunrise and the impact that this would have on Hong Kong as a transit hub (“Hong Kong airport faces threat as Qantas plans new ultra long-haul flights”).

As a very frequent traveller between Australia and the United Kingdom, I can safely assure you that there is no way I would sit on a plane for 20 hours (even if I was in first class). I guarantee you I am not alone.

I always break my journey in Hong Kong. It is a fantastic destination as a stopover city, far exceeding Singapore or any of the other typical stopover destinations. Your airport itself, for those people who just change planes, is consistently ranked one of the best in the world. For business/first travellers on Oneworld airlines, Cathay Pacific’s lounges at Hong Kong International Airport are said to be the best in the world.

Hong Kong and Australia or the UK are so well connected. Cathay flies four times a day to Sydney, Qantas two times and Virgin Australia once daily. Onward connections to London are just as impressive, thanks to frequent flights with Cathay, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

You honestly have nothing to worry about. I will continue to make stopovers in Hong Kong, as will hundreds of thousands of others.
