Boisterous experience at La Vache! in Central

Steak and frites.

It's a basement space; low ceilings and tables that are too close exacerbate the chatter and noise. A bit like a Western cha chaan teng.

about HK$500 per head including a glass of wine.

Friends who are in a hurry and not into talking.

You don't have to spend much time on the menu since you essentially only need to choose drinks, dessert and how you like your steak done. The millefeuille was the highlight of the meal. Unlike the normal delicate French version, the layers were chunky but delicious. We appreciated that the cream was not too sweet.

The noise level and having two tables joined together, and sitting with strangers, weren't pleasant. From the moment we sat down, we felt rushed to finish. While it is understandable because they need the turnover from the tables, it didn't make for a pleasant meal. My steak was done just right, but my guest's had too many tough tendons and she gave up halfway.

Good selection of wines.
