Where to eat in Hong Kong in May: chef Vicky Cheng of Michelin-starred Vea opens refined Chinese concept Wing, Salisterra replaces Cafe Gray at The Upper House, and 11 more new restaurants and menus

As vaccinations are under way, Hong Kong’s dining scene is slowly opening back up, with later closing times and more people allowed to dine at one table. Many eateries that had hoped to open months ago are now finally able to welcome customers in a more relaxed environment.

This month, acclaimed chef of Michelin-starred Vea, Vicky Cheng, launched his refined Chinese concept, while new Mediterranean restaurant Salisterra takes up the space vacated by Cafe Gray in The Upper House. Read on to discover more exciting concepts just launched in our fair city.

Vicky Cheng, chef of Michelin-starred Vea, dug deep into his Chinese roots for his take on refined Chinese cuisine. Taking inspiration from the eight culinary traditions of China, chef Cheng will respect traditional disciplines during preparation while adding new techniques and combinations. Diners can look forward to dishes like crispy skin sugar cane-glazed crispy pigeon, chopped chilli fish maw and king crab congee with chicken oil.

The city collectively shed a tear when it was announced that Cafe Gray on the 49th floor of The Upper House would close. Taking its place though is the much anticipated Salisterra, a Mediterranean-themed restaurant that promises to bring the flavours of coastal France and Italy to the plates of Hong Kong. The decor has been updated with clean marble and jade green accents. Definitely one to check out in the coming months.

Airy and spacious, a great place for hanging out with friends just opened on the edge of Sai Ying Pun. Casa Cucina boasts three floors of dining space decorated in tropical resort-style designs while on the plates are Ciccetti-inspired comfort food such as duck ragu pappardelle, stuffed calamari and oxtail ravioli.

New Opening: Eat Fuh

Australia has some of the best Vietnamese food outside the country and bringing a taste of that to the slopes of Sai Ying Pun is Eat Fuh. The takeaway-only restaurant makes their broth from scratch and produces wonderfully hearty bowls of pho. The chicken fuh combo noodle soup sticks to tradition with slices of chicken meat accompanied by gizzards and liver, while the beef fuh combo is jam-packed with beef, tendons, beef balls and all the fixings.

Coffee shop by day, wine bar by night, Dio has opened its doors on the edge of Central at Kau U Fong. This place is for discerning palates with its single origin coffee hand-filtered to accentuate intricate flavours while its espresso-based drinks employ a shop-exclusive blend of Brazilian and Colombian beans.

New Opening: Natura

 
For a breath of fresh air in the concrete jungle, head over to Natura in Wan Chai. Designed by the team behind Origami Florist, the decor is to be refreshed every three months to reflect the season, with the current spring decor prettily pink. The cafe promotes a low-carbon footprint lifestyle where all the to-go products utilise low-emission packaging.

New Opening: Can Lah

Breathing new life into Singaporean and Malaysian dishes is chef Francis Chong Wui Choong, former president at the Society of Chinese Cuisine Chefs in Singapore. His latest venture, on the third floor of the IFC Mall, presents a “Chef’s Table Singamakase” that will feature delectable seasonal dishes, while staples such as Chong’s signature crab, grilled sambal turbot fish and dry laksa with lobster seafood are on the à la carte menu.

New Opening: Katsumoto Sando Bar

 

This one is for the fans of Katsumoto’s famous thick-cuts, as a sando-only concept from the brand has opened in Soho. Apart from the delicious Wagyu sando, you can also opt for the pork katsu or Chilean sea bass sando. Other items such as chicken karaage and shishito peppers are on the menu, and you can wash it all down with an impressive list of signature cocktails.

New Opening: Grotto

 

Just smell the delicious coffee brewing behind the cerulean arches of Grotto in Quarry Bay. The beans are roasted by Grotto’s own team and they sell their special blend for patrons to enjoy at home as well. The cafe dishes on the menu all include a unique Asian twist such as the mochi scone and Not-so-Korean bibimbap, and we heard that the nam yu cheesecake sells out daily.

A new chef means a brand new menu at Kinship. Head chef Nelson Gonzalez is intertwining his South American roots with his experience of Asia with his novel and innovative creations such as duck “char siu” – crispy duck breast in char siu sauce accompanied by local vegetables from the New Territories – as well as steak tartare seasoned with Sichuan peppercorn and served with crispy aubergine. Don’t worry, the crispy Brussels sprouts are still on the menu.

From now until May 30, Tokyo Michelin-recommended ramen experts Takano and fine dining concept Tirpse will join hands to create a unique dining experience. True to Tirpse’s style, both the lunch (HK$488) and dinner menu (HK$898) will feature Takano’s famous noodles in refined and creative ways. Get your chopsticks into delicious creations such as buckwheat noodles with sea urchin and caviar, as well as other scrumptious dishes like soy-glazed, pan-seared flank steak and more.

Ciao Chow weekend buffet brunch

 

Brace yourself for the best-value brunch in Central. For only HK$358 per adult and HK$180 per child you can gorge on unlimited pizza, pasta, carving station items and much more at Ciao Chow. Kick things up a notch with free-flow prosecco, wine, beer and more for an extra HK$228 per person. Best two and half hours spent in the city.

Summer is almost here and 208 Duecento Otto is prepared to entice your taste buds with their new dishes. Sink your teeth into chef Zeno Bevilacqua’s risotto marinara, which uses fresh, high-quality seafood with a twist – freshly made basil pesto sauce – from the region of Liguria. Other delectable selections include Atlantic Scottish squid, slow-cooked suckling pig belly, spring lamb confit or Italian-styled mille-feuille.
