Star of foodie TV shows The Maverick Chef, Wok Star, Seoul Extreme and Seoul Refined, Leung’s latest honour is the traditional Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole

Hong Kong celebrity chef Alvin Leung has been honoured with a prestigious award from the French government, the Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole, in recognition of his special services to agriculture.

The presentation took place at ClubOne Repulse Bay, where a commemorative dinner event was officiated by Alexandre Giorgini, consul general of France in Hong Kong and Macau.

Among Leung’s friends in attendance were several notable faces from Hong Kong’s culinary circles, including Michelin-starred chefs Richard Ekkebus, culinary director of The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Umberto Bombana of Otto e Mezzo Bombana fame and Celebrity Cuisine’s Cheng Kam Fu.

Leung is himself owner and executive chef of three-Michelin starred Bo Innovation: The Hong Kong Story, which offers innovative Cantonese fare which he calls “X-treme cuisine”.

Beyond the city where he first made his mark, Leung’s casual eateries span multiple cuisines and locations alike. They include Forbidden Duck, MIC Kitchen, Bib N Hops and Raku in Hong Kong, R&D in Toronto, Canada, Daimon in Taipei, 15 Stamford in Singapore and Fuhu Restaurant & Bar at Resorts World Genting in Malaysia.

Nicknamed “The Demon Chef”, Leung is widely known as a judge on Masterchef Canada, while in Asia he is seen on shows such as The Maverick Chef, Wok Star, Seoul Extreme and Seoul Refined. He is currently shooting Wok the World and has just released his first book, My Hong Kong.

The Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole – or Order of Agricultural Merit in English – is an historic honour which dates back to 1883 and is given as a special distinction for services to agriculture.
