Veganism and vegetarianism

Former meat lover tells James Corden’s ‘Late Late Show’ that, ‘Veganism is on the rise, we’ve got to adapt’

Gordon Ramsay shocked the world last year when he announced he had become a vegetarian – something at odds with the public stance he had taken against vegetarians and vegans, being the owner of steakhouse maze Grill in Hong Kong and London, and the slew of meat dishes offered by his other brands such as Bread Street Kitchen.

The former meat lover had even pronounced to being a member of PETA – “People eating tasty animals” and that he was “allergic to vegans”.

The potshots he has taken at vegetarians included Girls Aloud’s Cheryl Cole when she appeared on Ramsay’s TV show The F Word in 2007. When he found out she was a strict vegetarian, he said, “Didn’t you get the message? Vegetarians aren’t welcome here”, and he once said that his “biggest nightmare” would be if his children became vegetarian. Vegetarian Paul McCartney had even offered to talk to the celebrity chef about the advantages of being vegetarian.

So when the celebrity chef created a vegan roast at Bread Street Kitchen this week and posted it on Twitter, the twittersphere went into overdrive with people criticising Ramsay for his about-turn on the matter.

Talk show host Piers Morgan chimed in with expletives followed by “not you as well. This looks utterly revolting” – next to vomiting emojis. To which Ramsay responded, “Piers Morgan is now a food critic. Go and f*ck yourself”.
