The heartbreak of a 10-year-old boy after his pet chick died has gone viral on the mainland Chinese internet.

The boy, from Xuzhou in Jiangsu province in east China, sat on the ground and cried loudly for three hours while holding the body of his beloved pet, according to the news outlet Thepaper.cn.
His father, surnamed Cui, said he bought three baby chickens two weeks earlier for the boy to raise as pets.

The father said the chick probably died because of warm weather and the boy likely did not take proper care of the bird.

“He could not accept the chick’s death and did not stop crying for three hours,” said Cui.

The father helped his son find an empty patch of soil where they buried the bird. The boy also set up a gravestone marked with the words “the chick’s tomb” on it.

A quick phone call to the fire department from an 11-year-old boy after a pet shop caught fire likely saved the lives of 30 dogs trapped inside.

Ling Hao, who lives in Suzhou in Jiangsu with his father, woke up to the sound of the dogs barking anxiously from the next-door shop.

He calmly called the fire department and then stood near the pet store to help guide the fire engine to get closer to the source of the fire, according to a press release from the fire department.

“He reminded adults at the site to find fire extinguishers,” the department said. “This boy deserves a big thumbs-up from us.”

Twenty minutes later, firefighters extinguished the flames, and no dogs were injured in the fire.

Waiting seven hours for a package

A video of a grandfather sitting on the pavement for seven hours waiting for a package from his granddaughter set the mainland Chinese internet abuzz.

The old man, whose age was not clear, sat under the blazing sun from 7am to 2pm only donning a wide-brimmed hat, said the store owner who shot the video in a report on Qilu Evening News.

The grandpa, who lives in Xinyang, in Henan province in central China, told the store owner that he was waiting for a package from his granddaughter that contained watermelons and rice dumplings.

“I told him to go home first and recheck the delivery later, but he insisted on waiting,” the store owner said. “He also turned down my offer to give him some water to drink.”

“He is showing off by waiting for so long,” another user quipped.
