The Adventure Trail: Nikki Han on her history-making, record-breaking ultra marathon win

  • Trail runner talks about what it takes to stay awake for 58 hours and run for 298 kilometres to become the first woman to finish the Hong Kong Four Trail Challenge

In this episode Mark and Mary discuss the latest news in Hong Kong’s trail running community, including the recent attempted sabotage of the Sai Kung 50 and its impact on runners .

They also discuss the Hong Kong Four Trail Challenge, in which competitors attempt to run a 298-kilometre course that links the Maclehose, Wilson, Hong Kong and Lantau Trails, non-stop and with no support. Joining them is special guest Nikki Han, who made history in early February when she became the first woman to finish the brutal challenge.

Not only that, but she succeeded in what is known in the community as the ‘Breaking 60’ challenge, by completing the course in 58 hours and 20 minutes. Listen to how she did it: from the mental preparation and crucial support of her friends and family, to the equipment, food and drinks she carried and the music she listened to – and how avoiding looking at a particular post box for months was crucial in the leadup to the race.
