Japanese developers Mitsubishi Estate on Thursday unveiled plans for the country’s tallest skyscraper, which will be around 390 metres high and will be built in front of Tokyo Station.
The building will be named “Torch Tower” and is expected to be completed in 2027. The cost is estimated to be 500 billion yen (US$4.7 billion).
The new landmark will feature 63 stories above ground and four underground, and include a complex of offices, commercial facilities and a hall accommodating around 2,000 people.

A luxury hotel and an observation deck, where visitors can view Mount Fuji, Japan’s tallest mountain, will be located in the upper floors.
The name Torch Tower comes from a wish to light up Japan like a torch, Mitsubishi Estate said.
The planned skyscraper forms part of a development project in a 31,400 square metre area near Tokyo’s Marunouchi business and commercial district, to be named Tokyo Torch.
The project will also include three other buildings and a 7,000 square metre plaza.
“By adding a new attraction, we will shape Marunouchi into a district that would be chosen [by businesses],” said Mitsubishi Estate president Junichi Yoshida while unveiling the project.

The tallest building in Japan currently is the 300-metre Abeno Harukas in the western city of Osaka.
A 330-metre skyscraper is being constructed in central Tokyo by Mori Building Company and is expected to be completed in 2023.
The world’s tallest building is the 828-metre Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates.
