Snow shortage in Swiss Alps cools demand in peak season
A record winter heatwave has put many ski resorts in the Swiss Alps out of business as a shortage of snow is making it impossible for sports aficionados to enjoy the region’s famed slopes. On January 1, 2023, the maximum temperature in the region was 20.9 degrees Celsius (70°F), the highest ever for this time of the year.

Nepal guides fix ropes on Everest
Standing on the border between Nepal and China, Mount Everest is Earth's highest mountain and a huge draw for climbers from around the world. Ahead of the 2022 season, a team of eight Nepali mountain guides led by record Everest climber Kami Rita Sherpa have the risky job of fixing ropes along the routes to the summit. The team will be the first to reach the top of Everest as they do the job. Nearly a tonne of ropes, gear and oxygen cylinders has been packed for the team for transport to the Everest base camp.
