Despite the fall of the Soviet Union, tensions between the United States and Russia have been a constant since the end of the Second World War. However, they hit a new high in 2022 when Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine, leading to a protracted war in which the US gave aid to Kyiv while placing substantial sanctions on Russia.

The former president, who looks set to win the party nomination for another White House run, can be expected to bring the US more in alignment with Putin’s Russia, with help from the likes of senators Tom Cotton and Ted Cruz.
