The group will soon complete and drop their third studio album.

The last few months have been a whirlwind for Fifth Harmony – in more ways than one. There has been the high of winning armfuls of music awards, along with the uncertainty of Camila Cabello’s departure, as well as the excitement of heading back into the studio to record #5H3. Speaking over the phone from Los Angeles last week, Dinah Jane Hansen was only looking forward to what the future held.

What have you been up to?

We’re getting glammed up to do some interviews here in Los Angeles. We’ve been working in the studio all this week, and the two weeks before. It’s been constant work.

Looking forward to hitting Hong Kong?

The fact we’re going to Hong Kong is a dream come true. I’ve been waiting for this all my life.

Will you get to do any sightseeing?

I believe so. We always see our Hong Kong fans on social media, so to [get to] meet them in person will be magical.

Congrats on all your awards lately – most recently the huge hail at the Kids Choice awards!

Thank you. It’s been unreal lately. We came home with five awards last week. And it’s all thanks to our fans. They always go hardcore for us. We love them so much.

How did you celebrate?

Lauren (Jauregui) got slimed. I ran off stage very quickly because I knew something was going to happen. We have a tradition where we go and eat at In-N-Out, a burger joint here in California.

Did Lauren have that slime on her all night?

Basically. And those outfits weren’t slimeable! But it was worth it.

It sounds like a fun start to the year. Can you tell us anything about your next album?

We’ve been in the studio for almost a month and a half. It’s been amazing to be part of the process. We’ve been asking our label for a while now to be more involved in the process of making music, and they’ve allowed us. Just having our voices heard and having some creative direction between us – we’re all so different musically and genre-wise – made sense to create that Fifth Harmony sound. We’ve been exploring with different sounds and tones, and I think this is the most harmonious album we’ve had.

Where have you looked to for inspiration on this album. Has anything in particular triggered your creativity?

Our inspiration comes from one another and being on the same page. I know it sounds clichéd, but harmoniously, it’s amazing how we can all collectively share ideas – whether that’s sharing your past or what you’re currently going through. We get each other and have been there for each other during the past four or five years sharing experiences with one another and knowing that we’re now going through it alone.

What do you think is the most important mistake you’ve made along the way?

That’s a great question, we’ve honestly never been asked that before. We always talk about communication, which I personally fall short on. That’s the core of keeping things on a roll. I’m a very internal person with my feelings – I’ve always been that way – so it’s been a challenging struggle to tell people how I feel and what’s on my mind. But with the help of the other girls, we help strengthen each others’ weaknesses. I’ve gotten better, but it’s still been a challenge.

When you’re going through emotional periods, do you have any key albums you listen to?

I always listen to Leona Lewis. Her Spirit album was my everything. I know every word off by heart. Vocally and lyrically I feel her. I picture myself singing her songs; you just need to get to a vulnerable state where you can just feel. I hold her and Carrie Underwood’s albums close to my heart. It’s my little cute escape.

If you ruled the world, what would be your first act?

I love food, so I’d probably get everyone a free day of [eating burgers at] In-N-Out. That’s gotta be on the list somewhere. Apart from that, I’d pass an act of kindness towards one another. That’s so important.

Which fictional character do you relate to most?

There are so many great ones! No pressure or anything. I always loved Cinderella. Does that count? Or Bella from Twilight. I love her so much. I don’t know if Twilight’s still a thing. I’m still in that Twilight zone. I love me some Edward!
