Crime-busters almost always come in pairs; in The Lone Ranger, that duo is Native American Tonto (Johnny Depp) and lawyer-turned-ranger John Reid (Armie Hammer) who hunt down wendigoes, or bad guys.

The film opens as a young boy dressed in a cowboy suit meets a wizened Tonto, who decides to tell the boy about his golden days.

Flashback to old Texas: Tonto meets John on a train, before they're attacked by outlaws trying to rescue Butch Cavendish (William Fichtner), their boss. This gang leader is so evil that he finds joy in eating human flesh. Cavendish later brutally kills Reid's brother, so to avenge him, John joins forces with Tonto.

The movie's shots of the American West are breathtakingly spectacular. Director Gore Verbinski proves a true master of film-making by seamlessly merging humour with the unsettling emptiness of the outback. And the final train fight is the highlight, a fun celebration of calamity.

Depp never runs out of ways to get the audience rolling in the aisles, taking belly-laugh-inducing awkwardness to a whole new level in this role.
