A black letterman jacket matches with almost anything.

It’s a challenge pretty much all of us face: deciding what to wear in the morning. Whether you’re going to see your mates at the weekend, planning for a non-uniform day at school, or worse, having to put together a new outfit every day to wear to university, sometimes it feels as if you have nothing in your wardrobe. Our solution: a varsity jacket.

Otherwise known as a letterman, this versatile item of clothing is an essential for any student’s wardrobe. It can be worn all year round, be dressed up or down, and comes in a variety of colours and designs. Best of all, you can throw one on top of practically any outfit, making your morning routine infinitely easier.

For this week’s varsity look – inspired by the Monsters, Inc. sequel Monsters University – our model Neel Chawla wears a black letterman jacket similar to the one Sully wears throughout the film, which we paired with a red T-shirt, a dark pair of jeans, and a pair of matching trainers. You could easily swap the jeans for a pair of shorts on a hot day, or completely switch up the look by wearing a clean button-up shirt, smart trousers, and a pair of leather shoes with your jacket for a more preppy look.

Short of dabbing a bit of concealer on your face to hide any undesired blemishes, there’s no need to wear a lot of make-up on campus – and who really has time for that in the morning, anyway? Just give your face a good wash and moisturise before you step out the door, and don’t skip the sunscreen. Investing in a good face wash and a moisturiser will keep your skin looking clear and healthy.

Choosing the right product for your skin type can make all the difference. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, look for a light, oil-free moisturiser that won’t clog your pores. If you have dry skin, you’ll want a heavier cream or gel that will keep your skin hydrated all day long. If you’re not sure what product is best for your skin type, ask a shop assistant at your local pharmacy to give you some recommendations.

Textured and tousled

For this casual look, we kept the hair fairly simple. If you have naturally wavy hair like Neel, all you need to do is add a bit of wax to help define your curls and control any flyaway hairs. Warm a coin-sized amount of product between your palms and lightly tousle your hair with your fingertips. Adding some wax to straight hair works as well; it will give it some body and texture. Just be careful not to add too much wax to your hair, or it might start to clump.

If, however, you do mess up or find yourself running late, don’t worry; you can always throw on a cap and you’re good to go.
