Renowned German stuffed toy makers Steiff recently opened a store in Hong Kong. Founded in the late 19th century, the brand is currently celebrating the 110th anniversary of the teddy bear.

The Steiff "Teddy" is named after the former United States President Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname was Teddy. The idea of a stuffed bear came about after President Roosevelt's famous bear hunting incident where he refused to kill a wounded captured bear, saying it was unsportsmanlike.

To celebrate, the brand has released a limited-edition, half-size version of the original "Teddy", made from dark brown, curly mohair.

The company's founder Margarete Steiff established the motto "Only the best is good enough for children", and that remains the basis of the company's products today - although as many items are likely bought for adults as for children. To date, every item is hand-crafted; no two teddies are identical.

Over the years, Steiff has collaborated with leading brands such as Louis Vuitton, Swarovski and Harrods. Many of these crossover products have fetched historically high bids at auction, reinforcing.

The Steiff store is at Shop 104, The Arcade, Cyberport. Steiff toys can also be found at Wise-Kids and W.E.T. shops. Go to www.steiff.com for the 2012 line. You'd better be very nice to your mum and dad if you want one, though; prices start at around HK$2,000.
