What would you do if your parents had to say "yes" to everything for an entire day? Photo: Instagram

What would you do if your parents had to say “yes” to anything you asked for for a full 24 hours? Would you finally get that puppy you’ve always wanted, or make the family spend a day at Ocean Park?

The idea of a “Yes Day” came from a novel of the same name by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, and the trend spread quickly across YouTube. Now, it’s a film on Netflix.

The movie portrays a typical American family: mum (Jennifer Garner), dad (Edgar Ramirez) and three kids (Jenna Ortega, Julian Lerner and Everly Carganilla). After mum finds out her children think of her as a “dictator”, she listens to advice from another parent and decides to let them have a “Yes Day” - a day when the kids can ask for anything they want (within reason) and the parent has to say yes.

The kids - named Evan, Katie, and Ellie, only had five big asks on their special day, including going through the car wash with the windows down. While we would have liked to see them do more crazy activities, the film was only an hour and 30 minutes long, and we understand that it wasn’t possible to show too many different things.

The best part of the film was the concert Katie Torres attended because it gave us two different perspectives: it shows how much fun it is to be at a party, but also the loneliness you experience when you don’t feel like you fit in. We also appreciated how the movie shows the pressures put on the oldest children, who often have to be in charge in certain situations, even though they’re only kids themselves.

‘To All the Boys: Always and Forever’ is a charming romantic comedy

The movie is suitable for the whole family and especially relatable for parents, who know the struggle of saying “no” all the time, and who often have to adapt the roles of “Good cop” and “Bad cop” in the family.

“Yes Day” made my family laugh, cry, and cry from laughing so much. It’s one of the best family-friendly movies we’ve seen in a long time.
