The flu outbreak has been especially severe this year.

The seasonal flu outbreak has resulted in the largest number of deadly infections in recent years in Hong Kong. The number of deaths has reached 99 so far this year.

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health reminded the public about the importance of maintaining high standards of personal and environmental hygiene.

As of yesterday, the centre is investigating three outbreaks of an influenza-like illness in schools. Sixty-five pupils from three schools in Wan Chai, Sha Tin and Kowloon City fell ill late last month, as well as a member of staff at the school in Sha Tin.

Most pupils sought medical help. Two of them had to be admitted to hospital but have since been discharged.

The schools have been put under medical surveillance.
