Recently, the International Baccalaureate (IB) body announced that some candidates were involved in “misusing” global time zone differences to post exam questions online.
This gave students in other time zones an advantage, as they could study the questions beforehand. The IB authority has launched an investigation into the incident. It is the first time a leak of this kind has occurred in the body’s history.
More than 4,000 people have signed the petition requesting the IB cancel this year’s test results. While some think it would waste the efforts of those who worked hard and studied, doing so would help address the edge gained by those who cheated.
Some students obtained an unfair advantage by gaining access to leaked exam questions before taking the test, defeating the purpose of creating equal opportunity for all.
Identifying who used the online resources could be extremely difficult, making it impossible to penalise the culprits. By cancelling the results, the IB can maintain fairness, uphold academic integrity, and ensure equal opportunities for all.

It would also help the IB maintain the credibility of its examination and set a powerful precedent. The IB can demonstrate its unwavering commitment to upholding strict standards of academic integrity and maintaining a fair playing field. This action can serve as a cautionary tale for other students and hopefully deter similar incidents in the future.
By cancelling the test results, the IB reinforces the importance of ethical conduct while completing exams. Besides learning facts at school, we also learn morals. The IB should send a resolute message about the significance of ethical conduct, honesty, and integrity in academics. It underscores the notion that academic success should be achieved through honest means.
While this may disappoint students who put in a lot of effort to study for these exams, it is crucial to cancel the results, preserve the integrity of the IB diploma, and remind everyone of the gravity of academic integrity.

As an internationally renowned programme which determines the university destinations of nearly 200,000 pupils worldwide each year, the International Baccalaureate (IB) must carefully consider any changes to grades. Such changes could affect thousands whose futures depend on how the IB evaluates their efforts.
While official investigations claimed to find insufficient evidence of widespread cheating, IB students nonetheless expressed frustration upon learning of a paper leak after taking the exam. Many need clarification about the IB’s lack of meaningful action, and most are rightly aggrieved. Pirating platforms hosting alleged leaked papers have long been accessible with basic online searches, yet the organisation has not done enough to prevent such breaches.
Simply cancelling exam results would fail to deliver justice for affected students. Many exam papers were leaked to other places through social media platforms after the exam was administered in Asian and Australian time zones. Cancelling students’ results would unfairly punish innocent students who spent years diligently studying for the IB.
Should DSE candidates be able to choose their core subjects for the exams?
The body has other, more justified options than cancelling the exams. For example, it can urge universities around the world to lower entrance requirements in recognition of this atypical year since those who cheated may push the grade boundaries higher.
The IB should adhere to its plan to punish students who have been found to plagiarise from the paper leaks and take appropriate measures to identify them rather than punishing the entire student body. The November 2024 cohort is also requesting a higher level of internet scrutiny from the IB in the next examination season. Above all, students are demanding accountability.
As exams continue, it is of utmost importance that students witness a swift and decisive commitment from the IB to safeguard future exams from similar mass leaks.
These leaks undermine the integrity of their qualifications. The IB must act now to restore students’ trust in the system.
