Recap by phillip woo

Joyful Win just held off Flying Dragon after surging to the lead 150m out travelling behind midfield in the centre of the track for an upset win. It was his best effort at Sha Tin after four wins at Happy Valley. Flying Dragon finished strongly to make it close on the wire after getting impeded by the winner 200m out travelling towards the rear. He relished a return to the straight 1,000m. Summit Cheers kept on gamely to finish a close third despite laying out under pressure chasing the speed on the stands side. Solar Winds dashed late to fill the frame travelling two from the rear. He doesn't appear from his two outings this term to be far off a bottom. Adios kept on okay following a prominent run. He's not a straight 1,000m horse. Metro Warrior was repeatedly hampered in the run to the wire by Summit Cheers in a speed-chasing role. He should have finished closer. Lucky Quality ran on without menacing near the far side after making his run three from the back. Early favourite Flying Season stayed on OK after a handy run near the grandstand side. He appeared to need the run.

Racing Incident Report

Race Six: (42) - FU TAI HANDICAP - Class 3 - 1000Meters

FLYING DRAGON was slow to begin.

As FLYING DRAGON was being ridden along in an attempt to make up lost ground shortly after the start, it was checked away from the heels of FLYING SEASON (S De Sousa) which shifted out after being bumped by JOYFUL WIN on jumping.

S De Sousa was advised that whilst there were some circumstances to this incident, nonetheless he must make every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground.

LUCKY QUALITY lifted its front feet off the ground as the start was effected and then was bumped on the hindquarters by SMOKEY BEAR which shifted out.

SOLAR WINDS bumped the outside of its barrier stall on jumping and began only fairly.

JOYFUL WIN and SUPER KING bumped after travelling a short distance.

FLYING SEASON travelled keenly in the early stages.

After the 800 Metres, SOLAR WINDS was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SUPER KING which shifted in after being bumped by JOYFUL WIN which also shifted ground after bumping the hindquarters of KA YING SPIRIT.

SOLAR WINDS then commenced to travel keenly and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of SUPER KING near the 750 Metres.

The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the prima facie view that an incident occurred over about the final 150 Metres which cast doubt on whether SUMMIT CHEERS (Apprentice Y L Chung) should be declared the 3rd placegetter.

As the Stewards were of the opinion that whilst SUMMIT CHEERS shifted in over about the final 150 Metres and hampered METRO WARRIOR (Z Purton), which finished 6th, given the manner in which the two horses were finishing the race off and the margin between the horses at the end of the race, they were not satisfied that METRO WARRIOR would have finished in front of SUMMIT CHEERS and therefore did not proceed to a formal protest/objection hearing.

Z Purton also did not lodge a protest/objection on behalf of the connections of METRO WARRIOR in respect of this incident.

Subsequently, Apprentice Chung was severely reprimanded and told that in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a far greater effort than he did on this occasion to prevent his mounts from shifting ground.

When METRO WARRIOR was taken in, ADIOS was tightened for room outside JOYFUL WIN passing the winning post.

The Stewards considered a protest/objection lodged by C Wong, the rider of FLYING DRAGON, 2nd placegetter, against JOYFUL WIN (L Hewitson), the winner of the race, alleging interference near the 150 Metres.

After taking evidence from all parties and after viewing the videos, the Stewards found that passing the 300 Metres FLYING DRAGON was shifted in in an attempt to obtain running between SMOKEY BEAR and JOYFUL WIN.

As FLYING DRAGON was attempting to improve into this run, JOYFUL WIN shifted out near the 150 Metres, resulting in FLYING DRAGON having to be checked when disappointed for running and having to be shifted to the inside of JOYFUL WIN.

As the Stewards were satisfied that FLYING DRAGON had not established running between SMOKEY BEAR and JOYFUL WIN prior to that horse shifting out, they overruled the protest/objection and declared weighed-in on the numbers as semaphored by the Judge.

Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that FLYING DRAGON had not established running, nonetheless L Hewitson was reprimanded and told to ensure that he makes every endeavour to prevent his mounts from shifting ground in similar circumstances.

Approaching the 100 Metres, CLASSIC POSH raced in restricted room between LUCKY QUALITY and SOLAR WINDS which shifted in.

Then passing the 50 Metres, CLASSIC POSH was eased away from the heels of SOLAR WINDS.

After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on KA YING SPIRIT at the request of Trainer C S Shum.

The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea.

Before being allowed to race again, KA YING SPIRIT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

SUMMIT CHEERS, JOYFUL WIN and FLYING DRAGON were sent for sampling.
