Recap by phillip woo

The champion Romantic Warrior had to dig deep but he found enough to hold off Voyage Bubble by a neck in a ding-dong battle and bank his sixth Group One success. Nestled in nicely in third from the outside gate by James McDonald, $1.6 favourite Romantic Warrior hugged the rail turning for home and responded to the superstar Kiwi jockey's urgings. Returning to 2,000m for the first time since his Hong Kong Derby victory, Voyage Bubble had to come out around Senor Toba before straightening but still threw down the gauntlet to his decorated rival in impressive fashion. He's a serious horse. Nimble Nimbus was gallant in finishing three and a quarter lengths away in third, a length closer than he got to Romantic Warrior in the December's Group One Hong Kong Cup (2,000m). Third favourite Straight Arron was only fair in fourth after settling behind midfield in a race run at a good early clip, while Five G Patch ran fifth.

Racing Incident Report

Race Seven : (452) - THE CITI HONG KONG GOLD CUP - Class G1 - 2000Meters

Horse No 1 ROMANTIC WARRIOR (E486) J McDonald Near the 500 Metres was steadied and shifted to the inside of MONEY CATCHER to improve into clear running.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 2 VOYAGE BUBBLE (E436) Z Purton Lay in in the Home Straight.

Sent for sampling post-race.

Horse No 4 BEAUTY JOY (E058) K C Leung Got its head up in the early stages when being shifted across behind runners.

Leaving the 500 Metres improved into a narrow run between FIVE G PATCH and CHAMPION DRAGON and made contact with CHAMPION DRAGON.

Horse No 5 SWORD POINT (G448) L Hewitson A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 7 MONEY CATCHER (G171) L Ferraris After the race, L Ferraris reported that he had some concern with his mount's action behind when it commenced to give ground in the Home Straight and therefore he did not ride it out to the finish of the event.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

The performance of MONEY CATCHER was considered unacceptable.

Before being allowed to race again, MONEY CATCHER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Horse No 8 NIMBLE NIMBUS (E249) A Atzeni Kicked a rail in the saddling stalls, examined by the Veterinary Officer and passed suitable to race.

Jumped awkwardly.

Horse No 9 SENOR TOBA (G103) A Hamelin Slow to begin and then was crowded shortly after by SWORD POINT.

Checked at the 1500 Metres.

Was obliged to race wide and without cover for the majority of the event.

Horse No 11 CHAMPION DRAGON (G070) A Badel Near the 1500 Metres STRAIGHT ARRON was steadied in an endeavour to obtain cover behind ENCOUNTERED.

When STRAIGHT ARRON remained in a three wide position to the outside of ENCOUNTERED, CHAMPION DRAGON was checked to avoid the heels of STRAIGHT ARRON and as a result became unbalanced.

SENOR TOBA, which was following, was checked as a consequence.

After considering all the evidence, the Stewards found that the pace of the event easing slightly during that section of the race and STRAIGHT ARRON being steadied at that stage were the principal reasons for CHAMPION DRAGON having to be checked and therefore H Bowman was advised that he should exercise more care when performing similar manoeuvres in future.

Bumped near the 500 Metres.

After the race, A Badel stated that his mount failed to show sufficient pace in the early stages to hold a more forward position.
