Lucky With You returned to his best in emphatic style at Sha Tin last start with his first Class Two victory, and trainer David Hayes believes the four-year-old is anything but a “one-trick pony” as he prepares to tackle Happy Valley for the first time on Wednesday night.

After leading or being ridden close to the speed in his first seven starts – which included three wins and an eighth in the Classic Mile – Lucky With You travelled in the back half of the field under Karis Teetan last time out before mowing down his rivals in the straight.

“Ridden that way just showed that he’s got two strings to his bow, he’s not a one-trick pony,” Hayes said.

“Now he’s up in class that’s the way he’ll be ridden at Sha Tin, but he’s got the capability of taking a handy spot at the Valley if he draws well.”

And drawn well he has, with Teetan to have barrier three at his disposal aboard Lucky With You in the Class Two Grass Island Handicap (1,200m).

“We thought he trialled very well at Happy Valley [early in his career], we gave him a very easy trial there and he really seemed to like it,” Hayes said.

“He can sit third or fourth and I think he’ll zip around there. It’s worth trying anyway.”

Lucky With You is one of a handful of in-form gallopers in the field, with Campione and Eason both shooting for hat-tricks, and if he handles himself well, Hayes will bring him back to the city circuit for his final run of the campaign.

“I’m thinking if he runs well then he can have his next run at the Valley and then head out [for a spell],” the trainer said.

Also in the field is Group Two winner Voyage Warrior, who tackles the Valley 1,200m for the second time in his career after finishing a close fourth under Alfred Chan Ka-hei over the Valley 1,000m last start.

Chan retains the ride and trainer Ricky Yiu Poon-fai expects his charge to appreciate the jockey’s claim, which reduces his impost from top weight of 133 pounds to 128.

“I’ve put the five-pound claimer on him and I think he can go close. He’s really enjoyed himself in Conghua,” Yiu said of his six-year-old, who is still chasing his first win since that victory in the Group Two Sprint Cup more than two years ago.

Looking ahead to later in the week, while Hayes doesn’t have a runner in the final Group One of the season – Sunday’s Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) – he launches a two-pronged attack on the Group Three Sha Tin Vase (1,200m).

“I’m really excited, I’ve been dying to see Nervous Witness at 1,200m with no weight and I think he’ll run a mighty race,” Hayes said.

“Super Wealthy could have easily run second to Wellington last start [in the Group One Chairman’s Sprint Prize (1,200m)] and that’s the best form in town.”
