Dazzling Fit enhanced his Classic Series claims with a herculean performance and Colourful King came from the clouds in a sensational display as David Eustace celebrated a double at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Despite facing tough draws in their respective races, Colourful King exploded from last to smash his rivals in the Class Two 1,000m Turf Handicap before Dazzling Fit sealed Eustace’s brace with a gutsy victory in the Class Three 1,600m Turf Handicap.

“You’re hopeful when you go to the races with a nice team of horses, but I thought we were a bit unfortunate with barriers,” Eustace said.

“Both horses that won probably had the worst barriers you could think of, but they got terrific rides.”

Set a challenge from gate 14 in a competitive contest featuring several Classic Series prospects, Dazzling Fit looked in trouble when caught wide without cover in midfield under James McDonald.

However, the exciting son of Ribchester fought on tenaciously in the straight, edging past $3.9 favourite and Classic Series hopeful Beauty Bolt on the post to score by a short head.

“He did it very tough and I thought at the halfway stage, if he still ran well it would be a super performance, so I thought to win was a really good effort,” Eustace said.

“I had a mile race in three weeks penned in for him when I saw the draw and thought that it would be tough to win, but now I’m not sure where he goes next.

Dazzling Fit storms home down the outside under James McDonald.

“I view him as a Derby horse, not necessarily a Classic Mile horse but after today, that’s probably a bit unfair, so we’ll see.”

Dazzling Fit showed potential with back-to-back 1,400m wins last season and improved on his unlucky first-up sixth to win on Sunday.

Fellow four-year-old Colourful King had the disadvantage of barrier two down the straight, but a Zac Purton masterclass helped offset the gate.

Purton took the Australian import back to last and made a beeline for the better going near the outside rail before scything his way through the field.

Backed into $3.8 favouritism, Colourful King unleashed a devastating turn of foot to soar past Crimson Flash and score by a length and a half.

“We had a plan with Colourful King to go back and ride the fence and hope for a bit of luck and he got a beautiful ride from Zac,” Eustace said.

“I thought the straight would suit him. He’d had one go, but it was his first start in Hong Kong and wasn’t probably a fair reflection of him as a straight horse. He showed his class today.”

Purton picked up the ride on Colourful King when his regular rider Andrea Atzeni elected to ride Crimson Flash, whose streak of three straight wins came to an end. Baby Crystal was a distant third.

Zac Purton boots home Colourful King.

“It was a really good effort. It’s really hard to win from that side of the track,” Purton said.

“I thought there was no choice but to take him back and go across.

“The speed was always going to be there and it was just a matter of whether the run came and we had enough time to reel them in and he’s done it in really good fashion.”

Having bagged his first triumph at Sha Tin after a pair of Happy Valley victories last term, Eustace confirmed Colourful King will now be set for the Group Three Bauhinia Sprint Trophy (1,000m) on January 4.

His win capped a treble on Sunday for Purton, who lifted a pair of debutants – Packing Glory and Majestic Valour – to impressive victories in the Class Four 1,000m Turf Handicap and Class Four 1,200m Turf Handicap, respectively.
